Acid Reflux Disease

Acid reflux disease otherwise known as Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease is an illness where the lower part of the esophagus, responsible for closing up and keeping the food and acid in during the process of digestion, fails to work properly. When this happens, the acid goes back up causing severe damage to the esophagus. This is a rare but very troublesome case especially for those who tend to eat food that contains too much acid. When the esophagus becomes totally damaged, this is another chronic disease which will require continuous and painstaking treatments. The treatment for damaged esophagus is more complicated than the treatment for the acid reflux. Bottom line, prevention is always better than cure.

Acid reflux disease is sometimes also referred to as heartburn. However, this illness has absolutely no connection to the heart or whatsoever. People who experience the reflux are advised to see a doctor immediately in order to have the proper prescription of medicine needed to stop the production of acid in the stomach that might worsen the problem. Sometimes, doctors use the process of endoscopy to diagnose if the condition experienced is indeed acid reflux. This method is done by inserting a tube inside the esophagus. The doctor will be able to see what is happening inside the body and may arrive at a more reliable conclusion. However, early stages of acid reflux are not that evident. The process is only found effective when the esophagus has been severely damaged. The method is still very beneficial in spotting other illness such as ulcer.

Biopsy can also be used to see if the patient is suffering from acid reflux disease. Biopsies are often used to search for signs of cancer. Acid reflux has several symptoms and this will be visible with the method of biopsy. The first approach in determining whether a person suffers acid reflux is the examination of throat and larynx. Inflammation of these two is an indication of acid reflux but could also be an indication of other illness too. The most accurate method of determining acid reflux is the acid testing of the esophagus. High levels of acid on this part are clear and unquestionable sign of acid reflux. This method is also the most obtrusive method which is done by placing a tube in the esophagus through the nose for 24 long hours. The tube has a sensor on its end that will measure the amount of reflux that is happening over 24 hours.
